Workshop and camp offerings
Weekend workshops for children ages 7-11
A workshop session lasts two hours.
First, we discuss the theme of the session before embarking on the tracks of fiction or nonfiction.
Then, the participants write a text that will be read aloud and commented on.
Reading is the culmination of the workshop because the text meets its readers and thus becomes real.
It's also the time to share feedback, look for flaws and make suggestions to the aspiring author.
Saturday afternoons, 2-4 pm:
Sunday afternoons, 1-3 pm
Rate: $40 per session, $150 for 4 sessions
The House of Words offers weekly camps during the spring and summer breaks.
Unlike permanent workshops where a new writing theme is proposed to the students each week, the students work on elaborating a story throughout the entire week.
Dates: March 19-23 & 26-30, April 2-6, 9-11 or 2-4
Writing about one's life can be overwhelming. Undertaking this project in the setting of a group and with milestones and the facilitation of a trained coach makes all the difference. Ask about our dates and fees for more information about this offer.
On demand offerings
Should you have a specific need around writing, the House of Words would be happy to discuss with you on a customized offering more fitting to the institution/organization/school that you work for.
A few words about the founder
It all started at a young age...
...like most things that make our hearts beat. My parents enrolled me in a creative writing class as a teenager because they thought it was a good way to keep me busy on Saturday mornings while they could enjoy some children-free quality time (my brothers were versed into soccer).
It began with little poems, simple prompts given by a teacher who was gifted at transmitting her passion.I immediately fell in love with the power of words, the freedom which they gave me. I already loved to read but I didn’t know then how transformative, therapeutic, energizing of an experience it was to put my own words on a piece of paper.
The years passed and, although my love for writing remained, I studied political science and business administration and started my work life in various corporate positions, more reassuring in a way, but which lacked the feeling of fulfillment and flow which was so intense when I was dealing with words.
My AHA moment came recently, when I realized that not only did my love for writing had never ceased, but that I loved teaching it to my kids and sharing my passion with others, whoever they were and whatever the reason was that drew them to writing.
In France, my home country, it is said that one out of three people secretly dreams of writing a book. It might be your case too, or not, but regardless of your walk of life, your level of writing or your age, the Little Home of Writing welcomes you where you are and helps you trigger the creativity that lies within you and that just needs some time, space and the emulation provided by a group setting to be expressed at its best.
The House of words, in a nutshell
Literature does not cohabit well with academic constraints.
One needs to feel as liberated as possible from any kind of censorship or judgment when putting one’s words on paper.
As with any other art, there needs to be:
abandonment for there to be boldness,
lightheartedness for there to be originality,
letting go for there to be sincerity.
This is the key word.
Pleasure of reading
Pleasure of discovering,
Pleasure of sharing texts and ideas,
Pleasure of giving suggestions to fellow participants and receiving some as well,
Pleasure of seeing one’s work under a new light.
Pleasure of selfishly taking time away from one’s day-to-day life to dedicate them to writing.
Pleasure of finding flow and meaning in this activity.
The benefits of writing workshop work are numerous:
confronting other people’s points of view and own writings
accepting that sometimes we are not satisfied with what we’ve written and have to write it over,
digging the ideas that emerge within the group that the we can put in literature, etc
